Confidence in .be domain names remains high

For most of us the internet has become an essential part of everyday life: what’s more, 40% of Belgians even stay connected all the time. And while we’re reasonably concerned about online security, websites with .be domain names inspire confidence.

For 57% of Belgians, surfing the internet is an essential part of everyday life. Not only do we use the internet at work, but we also go online at home to relax. And some 40% stay constantly connected to the net as a way of keeping up to date. One in five Belgians, on the other hand, say that they mostly use the internet at work and deliberately restrict their online presence at home. Remarkably, 35% of respondents just use the internet as a quick way to look things up.

This is according to a market research study conducted by InSites Consulting for DNS Belgium in May 2017. We looked at internet usage among a representative sample of Belgian residents between the ages of 16 and 70.

Confidence high in .be domain names

But for all the convenience of the internet, and the many possibilities it affords, many of our fellow citizens have concerns about online security. What’s more, 45% of Belgians are constantly preoccupied with their web security. That said, just 28% know about the latest internet security tools, while 23% of the people surveyed describe themselves as expert in everyday internet use.

The most likely to be careful about the websites they visit are French speakers and those aged 55-70. 55% never visit a web page if its domain name looks unreliable. Domain names with the .be extension radiate reliability and, in the Belgian mind, are most strongly associated with secure, Belgian-built sites, at which high-quality information can be found.

For 26% of Belgians, the .be extension is the first to spring to mind. And although .com is less top of mind (18%) we tend to associate it (and .net) more with being “popular” and “easy to remember” than .be. So, although not the most popular extension, .be is the most obvious and the most evocative of high quality for Belgians.
