DNS Belgium and Telenet pilot project for a more reliable internet

In a unique project, DNS Belgium and Telenet are pooling their specific knowledge of the workings of the internet and are adapting their infrastructure to ensure more robust internet traffic for Telenet customers.

DNS Belgium and Telenet are placing one name server from the DNS Belgium clusters in the Telenet network under this pilot project. All servers in these clusters are geographically spread copies of each other and provide identically the same information. The copy at Telenet works seamlessly together with the other name server clusters of DNS Belgium. As such, there is always at least one properly and rapidly functioning name server for .be, .vlaanderen and .brussels domain names available for Telenet and its customers.

Extra security thanks to local infrastructure

The advantage is that traffic to the server goes exclusively through the Telenet network.  As a result, malicious traffic generated worldwide (DDoS or attacks on a network to make it unavailable for certain users) never affects the locally installed server.  Only locally generated traffic can arrive at the local server. As these servers can be reached only from the Telenet network, faster action can be taken when necessary. Thanks to the cooperation between DNS Belgium and Telenet, Telenet customers can avail themselves of a more reliable internet service.

Roll out of the pilot project

DNS Belgium will capitalize on the experience of this successful project to make similar cooperation arrangements with other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who have mainly Belgian customers. DNS Belgium considers the setting up of such a local infrastructure to be part of the continuous investment in the quality and availability of all internet services that count on .be, .vlaanderen and .brussels.
