For the very first time, we mapped out how many Belgian domain names have "dangling records" - outdated or misconfigured nameserver records that are still linked to domain names. These often concern domains that were once registered but have since been forgotten or are no longer in use.
Our analysis shows that 1.300 of the more than 1.7 million .be domains could be exploited by cybercriminals without the owners even noticing. We want to warn domain name holders and IT professionals in Belgium and urge them to stay alert for these neglected domain names.
This poses a security risk that opens the door to phishing , fraud, and malware . Cybercriminals can exploit incorrect DNS settings to redirect visitors to fake websites. In the worst-case scenario, they could even gain access to emails sent to the domain. It’s like placing a signpost to a destination you no longer manage — someone else can claim that address and turn it into a dangerous trap.

Although it is the responsibility of the domain name holder, we conducted a proactive scan for the first time this year. In total, we found 1,300 vulnerable .be domain names due to poor maintenance, and we personally warned the administrators. But we are now also addressing the issue publicly and asking all domain name holders and IT professionals in organizations to pay sufficient attention to it. The problem is not new, but with the rise in cybercrime, the risk of actual abuse is increasing.
Recently, it was revealed that even Mastercard was vulnerable due to a misspelled subdomain that still pointed to a service that no longer exists. Such a small mistake makes abuse child's play.
