Delete your domain name

Suppose that you wish to have your domain name deleted for one reason or another. What will you have to do?

The person or organisation who is domain name holder must contact your registrar and ask him to delete the domain name. Only the registrar is authorised to do so. It makes no sense to contact DNS Belgium for that purpose.

If you do not know who your registrar is, you can check below.

What happens after the cancellation?

Deleted domain names are not freed immediately. What happens after the cancellation differs depending on the extension of the domain name.

A  .be domain name

When your domain name is deleted, it is put in quarantine for 40 days. The domain name is not active, no updates can be carried out, and the name cannot be registered by someone else during that period.

The registrar who deleted the domain name, can reactivate it. A transfer can be carried out before or during the quarantine. After 40 days, the domain name is available again for whoever wants to register it.

A .vlaanderen or .brussels domain name

A deleted .vlaanderen or .brussels domain name is given redemption status for 30 days first. The domain name is not active, no updates can be carried out, and the name cannot be registered by someone else during that period.

The registrar who deleted the domain name, can reactivate (restore) it. No transfer can be carried out before or during the quarantine. No reactivation is possible after 30 days. The domain name is given ‘pending delete’ status for 5 days. After these 5 days (thus, 35 days after the cancellation request), the domain name is released for registration.
