Class 6B at GIBO Kaart in Brasschaat is the most media-savvy class in Flanders!

20 March 2026

Class 6B at GIBO Kaart in Brasschaat has won De Schaal van M! As the most media-savvy class in Flanders, they have been awarded 25 laptops by DNS Belgium.

De Schaal van M is a competition for children in Years 5 and 6. Together with their whole class, pupils and their teachers take on challenges related to media literacy themes. The class with the most impressive journey wins the prize.

Through this initiative, Mediawijs and Ketnet have been aiming for several years to draw attention to media literacy and the smart use of (online) media and trends. This year’s edition was a huge success, with a total of 38,500 participating pupils from 1,922 classes.

DNS Belgium has also been a proud partner of De Schaal van M for several years. That is why we are donating 25 refurbished laptops to class 6B at GIBO Kaart in Brasschaat! In addition to the donation, DNS Belgium is also sharing its expertise on online safety for children on the judging panel. The laptops will be presented by Sophie Dings, sustainability coordinator at DNS Belgium and a member of the De Schaal van M jury. The winning class was surprised on Friday 20 March with a visit from Ketnet presenter Emma. There, they were told that they are this year’s winners.

Why did this class win?

Class 6B managed to impress the jury the most. They created a wonderful website promoting media literacy principles, including a section for parents with tips on keeping their children safe in their digital lives. Using buttons, flyers, posters and social media posts, they successfully promoted their initiative both within and outside the school.

“It’s clearly a committed class that has learnt a great deal about media literacy,” says Sophie Dings of DNS Belgium. “It also shows that a website is still an excellent way to spread your message, both within and outside the school.”

Digital resilience

As the administrator of the .be, .brussels and .vlaanderen domain names, DNS Belgium is a strong advocate of digital inclusion for all ages. We run campaigns on online safety and support the digital resilience of children and young people, ensuring they have the knowledge and experience they need to explore the digital world for themselves.

De Schaal van M allows children to experiment for themselves in a safe environment, where they can fully express their enthusiasm and creativity. These are all things that we are passionate about as an organisation and support wholeheartedly.

Free teaching materials

De Schaal van M also offers free teaching materials that enable classes in primary school to work on media literacy. The materials also align perfectly with many of the learning objectives in the Media Literacy Curriculum and the final attainment targets.
